Brief Encounter (1945) has long been revered as one of the most romantic films in British cinema - a story of restraint, duty and unspoken longing played out between two strangers who meet by chance in a railway café. Briefest Encounters gently but powerfully turns the camera around. Briefest Encounters uncovers the hidden past of actor Cyril Raymond, who played Fred Jesson - Laura’s dependable husband in the film. In an uncanny twist of fate, Cyril himself experienced a ‘brief encounter’ with fellow actor Janet Morrison during a transatlantic stage production. Their love resulted in the birth of a son, Nicholas - a child who would never know his true parents. Born into a prestigious theatrical family, Nicholas was ultimately placed for adoption at the age of four. This film is about more than one lost love - it’s about three intertwined lives, missed chances and the emotional cost of convention. It is a testament to a hidden history and a reflection of the very themes that make Brief Encounter timeless: longing, restraint and the heartbreak of what might have been. Through personal archives, diaries, letters, interviews and present-day reflection, the film uncovers the real, human lives that existed behind the myth: the unseen emotional costs, the silences borne by women, the compromises made in the name of respectability and the stories that were never allowed to be told. This is not an exposé, nor a dismantling of a beloved film. Instead, Briefest Encounters is an act of restoration: giving voice to those who lived in the shadows of a story that became world-famous, and reclaiming emotional truths that history - and cinema - left behind. Almshouses trace their history back to monastic times when the terms “bedehouse”, “hospital”, “almshouse” and others described the provision of accommodation for those in need. With a long history reaching back to the fifteenth century and currently situated in a Grade 1 Listed Building dating from 1728, the Blue House is an Almshouse administered by a voluntary Board of Trustees. With 17 flats, the Blue House is located on an island in the centre of Frome, with a considerable well-maintained garden running alongside the river. It is a Registered Social Landlord, registered with the Regulator of Social Housing, affiliated to the Almshouse Association and is a Registered Charity. The flats offer warm and comfortable self-contained dwellings of character, where residents can continue to lead independent lives. There is also a common room available for communal functions where residents may, if they wish, join with others for coffee mornings/afternoons or other activities of choice. The trustees allocate accommodation based on the applicant’ s circumstances and the benefit likely to be derived from membership of an Almshouse community. To be eligible, potential residents must be 55 years of age or over, need to live in or have a strong historical connection with the Frome area, wish to be part of a community and be ‘in need’. Generally, the trustees consider economic hardship to mean that a person is not able to buy or rent a similar property in Frome. All residents need to be capable of independent living as no care facilities are provided by the Trust and there is no warden on site. The Blue House is managed on a day to day basis by 4 part-time staff: the scheme Manager; a Finance and Admin Officer, a Handyman and a housekeeper.

Laura started We Get It because she’d been there, done it, and knew how it felt. Every one of us that volunteers for the charity lives with cancer in some way or another, so we genuinely do get it. And like all good things, our charity was born out of our own experiences with the aim of helping others. Cancer’s tough, there’s no sugar-coating it, but it doesn’t have to define you. Our community members are proof of that. But there is no manual, and it’s hard to know how to deal with a cancer diagnosis or treatment, so meeting people who understand, and listening and learning from them is invaluable. This is why we do what we do. We create space to be real, whatever that means for you. Our community events are an open door where everyone is warmly welcomed. Pop in to our weekly Get Together, join our monthly Curry Club or come to one of our sell-out events. Whatever you need, there’s space for it. It might feel hard walking through the door, but it’s a relief to be understood and know you’re not alone. You’ll be glad you came. We’ve learned that small pleasures make a big difference. A good coffee somewhere nice, a chat with a friendly face, sharing stories, learning something new and having a laugh. Whatever stage or situation, you’re still you.
